A handmade leather jacket is a long-term investment. In order to get the most out of your jacket, you need to take proper care of it – and that includes storing it properly when you're not wearing it.

Aero's high-quality leather jackets are extremely durable, and with a little bit of care, they'll last a lifetime. You don't have to worry too much about damaging your Aero jacket by storing it incorrectly, but there are a few key considerations that you should bear in mind.

For instance, leaving your jacket in a spot where it's exposed to direct sunlight may cause the leather to become discoloured or dry out. You should also avoid storing your leather jacket in damp places where mildew may grow. Because we only use natural fibres in our linings (like wool), our jacket’s linings may be susceptible to moths when stored for a long time.

How to hang a leather jacket

We recommend storing your leather jacket in a space that will allow the leather to breathe and maintain its natural suppleness from the oils contained within it.

Do not wrap your jacket in plastic or hang it in a wardrobe that is already full to the brim. Your jacket should fit in comfortably with ample space either side of it. Suffocating the leather can dry it out.

You also want to make sure your jacket is hung in a way that supports its natural shape and doesn't create creases, as these could be very difficult to remove.

Choose a hanger (like Aero’s own hangers) that's robust enough to hold the heavy leather without altering the shape of the jacket over time. It's best to opt for a strong and wide wooden hanger, as these tend to be best for supporting the shoulders and keeping them in place.

Buy an Aero Leathers Coat Hanger

Never use a thin wire hanger or hang the jacket on a hook from its collar tab / chain, as these cannot support the leather and may cause the shoulders to droop downwards, ruining the shape of your jacket.

Final tips for storing your leather jacket

While an Aero jacket will look after you more than you will have to look after it, storing it correctly is important, but easy if you remember the following steps once you know how.

  • Store it out of direct sunlight in a cool and dry place
  • Use a correct a hanger
  • If possible, use a suit bag to provide additional protection
